Building Challenge

Students worked with partners to build a structure that could hold a heavy container of washers and that had an opening that we could slide a plastic cup through.  They earned more points for using fewer blocks in their designs.  Then, if they achieved these things, we gave their buildings a little "earthquake" test...  Here are our engineers hard at work!

Matter Matters!

In science we have been learning about matter.  We have talked a little bit already about 3 states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas), but mainly we have been working on describing properties of matter.   We have measured the length and width of objects using nonstandard units (such as tiles or cubes) and this week we practiced using a balance scale to measure the mass of objects (with plastic counting bears as our units).  We have also described the texture of objects (soft, hard, stiff, flexible, fuzzy, rough, smooth...), the colors, the shapes, and what the objects are made of (plastic, glass, metal, wood, cloth, rubber, paper...)  Today students got with a partner and selected a group of objects that could be grouped together by one of the properties of matter.  Then they called on classmates to try to identify how they had classified the objects.  It was hard to remember to only use the physical properties of the objects and not an everyday word (like toys) to group them.  Here are partners with groups of objects.  Can you figure out all the groups they made?
